Fender Champ 25 SE Impulses!

Postby DigitalMan » Sun Mar 29, 2009 10:02 pm

I just got a Fender Champ 25 SE, and I'm wondering if anybody wants some impulses from it. It's got a 6L6 GC power amp and a custom 12" Fender Speaker, as well as a pretty nice reverb.
I'll probably make them next weekend, while the rest of the family is out. I'll be using a SM57. Any requests for mic position and reverb/power amp settings are more than welcome.

Here are the impulses, don't forget to read the "readme"!

No problem, I'm aiming for Saturday, but it could be earlier, circumstances allowing. I'm going to try four different impulses, all close mic'd, one on axis and one off axis with the power amp dimed, one on axis and one off axis with the power amp at about 12 o'clock. It really has a great tone for crunch and clean tones, and even some stuff as heavy as 80's metal (the Metallica type, not the Winger kind  ). If anyone wants any other positions, let me know.

A little far on/off axis... would like to hear that.

Hi,

this a very good Fender amp with an awesome clean channel.
A friend of mine owns this model and I played several times with it.
Sounds perfect with singlecoils.I´ve got the best sound when I turned the Loudness(Master Vol.) knob at 8.
So if it´s possible make some impulses with the power amp at 8 and also at maximum(curious about that) :D

Yeah, it has a really amazing clean channel. Power amp at 8? Sure. Also, as it's open back, I'll take some impulses with it in the middle of the room, and some with it backed up against a wall.
So the list'll probably be something like this:

On axis, close, power amp at 5, against wall
On axis, close, power amp at 8, against wall
On axis, close, power amp at 10, against wall
On axis, far, power amp at 5, against wall
On axis, far, power amp at 8, against wall
On axis, far, power amp at 10, against wall
Off axis, close, power amp at 5, against wall
Off axis, close, power amp at 8, against wall
Off axis, close, power amp at 10, against wall
Off axis, far power amp at 5, against wall
Off axis, far power amp at 8, against wall
Off axis, far power amp at 10, against wall

On axis, close, power amp at 5, middle of the room
On axis, close, power amp at 8, middle of the room
On axis, close, power amp at 10, middle of the room
On axis, far, power amp at 5, middle of the room
On axis, far, power amp at 8, middle of the room
On axis, far, power amp at 10, middle of the room
Off axis, close, power amp at 5, middle of the room
Off axis, close, power amp at 8, middle of the room
Off axis, close, power amp at 10, middle of the room
Off axis, far power amp at 5, middle of the room
Off axis, far power amp at 8, middle of the room
Off axis, far power amp at 10, middle of the room

All in all, 6 minutes of white noise at high volume...

Years and years ago I had one of the old silverface champs, only 5 or 6 watts but cranked up a fantastic sound, wish I still had that amp :(

Look forward to hearing your IRs

If you'll end up experiencing long "noisy" tails on the IRs, I suggest you to use a sinesweep instead of a pinknoise...

Champ 25 SE Impulses!

Postby DigitalMan » Thu Apr 02, 2009 11:57 pm

EDIT: A new set of impulses which supersedes the old one is available here: http://rapidshare-not-allowed.com/files/223781236/Fender_Champ_25_SE_Impulses.zip

Here's a test impulse, it's my first, so outside feedback would be awesome. I'll make some more this weekend, if all goes well.

I have one, maybe irrational worry: If I run a sine sweep at 10 through my speaker, do I run the risk of damaging it?

I recorded it using a SM57 close, on axis, loudness (power amp) at 5, using, as impulse master Alu suggested, a sine sweep.
Signal chain:
Sine sweep (in REAPER) ---> Line6 Pod Studio out ---> Power amp in ---> SM57 ---> Line6 Toneport in ---> REAPER
It was done at a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit depth of 24 bits.

Hello DigitalMan,

I just checked out your test impulse. I like the tone! However, I noticed an audible delay sort of artifact when the guitar stops playing. This doesn't seem to happen with other impulses. Could it be the 'noisy tail' Alu mentioned? I'm still learning about impulses, but I took your wav file, deleted most of the blank space at the end (total length shortened from 2.996secs to .139secs), and weird 'tail' noise is gone! Anyone know if that's normal?
Also, I never cranked my amp when making impulses- is it necessary? If you are worried about the speakers, I wouldn't.

Here's a solo'd guitar showing the tail:

Good Luck!

It is normal, you always have to cut the tail.
The problem is that pink noises can bring more "noise", sweeps are more polished...

Anyway, I suggest you to cut the impulse down to 2048 samples for best accuracy.
2048 samples = (1/samplerate) * 2048 (where samplerate = 44100, 48000, 96000 depending on what you used to record and export). The result is the length of the IR in seconds.

If you still have delay issues, try to lower the samples to 2048 - 512 = 1536.
Take 1024 samples as minimum limit.

Cheers

Voxengo Deconvolver has a utility that generates a 15 second sine sweep.

Alright folks, here they are, 24 impulses from my Fender Champ 25 SE, which, for those unfamiliar with it, is a 1x12 open back amp with a 25W class AB 6L6GC power section.

I recorded it using a trusty old Shure SM57, with the loudness knob (power amp level) at 5, using, a 12 second sine sweep.

Signal chain:
Sine sweep (in REAPER) ---> Line6 Pod Studio out ---> Power amp in ---> SM57 ---> Line6 Toneport in ---> REAPER
It was done at a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit depth of 24 bits.

The impulses were done in two batches, the first with the amp in the middle of the room, and the second with the amp against the wall.

The mic positions were identical each time, and were as follows:

Code: Select all

On Axis:                      Off Axis:                    On Edge:
Against Grille              Against Grille            Against Grille
1  inch from grille         1  inch from grille       1  inch from grille
6  inches from grille       6  inches from grille     6  inches from grille
12 inches from grille       12 inches from grille     12 inches from grille

Anyways, here's the link, and don't forget to read the "readme"!

Thanks, man, much appreciated. I'm thinking of doing some rear-mic'd ones, as it's got an open back, but I'm unsure how to do it. I've never rear-mic'd anything, aside from using the Guitar Rig rear mic position.

Hello DigitalMan,

Thanks for these impulses! It is interesting (to my ears) to hear the differences between these. The tone completely varies with the distance you positioned your mic, providing many possibilities. These came out great, nice sound-no delay tail or echoes- I think you've got this down.

Overall, I prefer the mid-room impulses. Somehow they sound fuller, more live, & have more realism. It's hard to believe that there is so much difference resulting from amp placement in the room! My favorite is the 57 edge,grille- sounds like a 4x12.

How loud did you end up setting your amp when these were made?

Cheers
