Blind deconvolution of Passion and Warfare's Erotic Nightmares intro

Postby eugtone » Wed Dec 07, 2016 7:59 am

Here is an impulse I derived from the intro to "Erotic Nightmares" by Steve Vai using a naive blind deconvolution method I wrote in Mathematica.

The idea was: search for an unknown impulse response such that deconvolution by that impulse (which should include cabinet, room echo, Lexicon verb, delay) produces a 'pre-cab' signal that is as simple as possible. Specifically, such that the rms power of the impulse times the rms power of the deconvolved signal is minimized. I have no idea what that will attempt to achieve, but I used a random search iterative algorithm and let it run all night and got the following 2000-sample 44.1kHz impulses for L/R.

Huge caveats, of course, that non-linear effects and compression and mastering, etc. will probably totally throw this off.

But I tried these impulses in Axe FX and they sound pretty good! Haven't spent much time trying to match the original track yet, though.

Also attached is the stereo deconvolved 'pre-cab' signal: try to get your pre-cab signal to sound as close to this as possible so that applying these impulses matches Vai's tone.

I also deconvolved the Erotic Nightmares intro by all of the impulses in RedWirez's Big Box Bundle, and found the following resulting in minimal signal variance (the simplest pre-cab signal). These might then be the closest approximation to an impulse to get that tone. Interesting to note that he claimed to use 4x12 marshall cabinets close miced with 421 and 57 mics and 30-watt celestion speakers on that album.

Thx!

I could try the method on Gregg Howe. Can you point me to a song and section where there is nothing but guitar? The method requires a guitar tone in isolation, unfortunately.
