I know just that for room reverbs is better to use long sweeps...
Sweep is the best solution imho, cause it contains all the audible frequencies...

Yes I think... you can capture the "color" of the compressor, but not the compression itself I think...

Alu...
Thanks for answering all these questions!

OK... Now I tried it with a distortion box...
And still no results... Damn
It this another impossibility?
Shoot, sorry to be so amateur, but I am just getting into this...

Impulses capture ONLY LINEAR characteristics of a system.
Distortion is not linear, so it won't be captured...
Eq is linear, so it can be captured...
Reverb is (sometimes) linear, so it can be captured...

Re: How to create an impulse

Postby janarvid » Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:21 am

This week I'm gonna make some impulses of one cabinet that I'm gonna sell (I'm only using impulses nowdays)

I have two questions:

1. How long do the test tone sweep have to be?

Alu, you are saying 12 sec, but other people use 6 or 3 sec sweep tone. 12 sec sweep is
earkilling and not very neighbourfriendly at loud volume. And when I'm planning to make 25-50 or more impulses
of my cabinet, it can be a real torture.

2. Alu, your turtorial say "remember to add at bit of silence at the end of the clip...". How long silence..0,01ms or 1sec?

Thanks :-)

Great!

1) There are no rules about the length of the sweep, it should work with a 3s sweep too... longer sweep assures more accurate impulses, but you could get the same result with 3s or 12s I think...
You could use a pink noise instead of a sweep, it should be even better...

2)Let's say 1 second or so, but I think that a few ms are fine too... it's just important that the processed tone is longer than the test tone...

PINK NOISE RULEZ for impulse test tone!
Thanks Alu :-) I will never use sine sweep again!

I also did some miked amp-frequency-analysis between pink noise, white noise, and sine sweep . Pink noise and sine sweep gave me the same frequency curve. White noise had a different frequency curve in the lows and highs.

I had some terrible distortion somewhere in my signal chain when turning up volume with sine sweep (around 2kHz). (Speaker cone distortion, mic distortion, soundcard distortion, cable distortion ????).

With Pink noise, it was gone. I could turn up the volume and get a good snr ratio, and no amp hiss. Then I got better sounding impulse. I think some high frequency get lost in low snr-ratio with sine sweep test tone :-)

It is also much more ear-friendly when making impulses ;-)

Pink noise avoid those nasty frequency peaks, I don't know why... but it works!

What cab is that?

It's just a Marshall 1936 cab that I'm gonna sell. I think it's not the most wanted impulses :-)

I can post the impulses one day when I have deconvolved them all, and quality-checked them ;-) I made 30+ impulses with mic placement from right to left on both speakers, and some angeled. I also gonna make some documentation (drawings of mic placement, photos, and more). That's one thing I miss when other people post impulses.

I used the FX-return on a Marshall AVT head when I recorded the impulses. I thought about using a Denon Hi-fi stereo amp with linear frequency output. Then the amp will not color the cab impulses.... Anyone having comments about that?

Next time I will make some impulses of a Marshall 1960cab. Nice to have some feedback about using a JCM900 amp or a Denon hi-fi amp when recording impulses.

Alu. Do you have any idea why a white noise make a different frequency curve than sine-sweep/pink noise when analyzing the recorded signal? White noise is linear, and in my mind that should be better. Pink noise is not linear.
Pink noise got -3dB/octave.....

Sorry noob question here, as I'm about to sell my guitar amp and Digitech GSP1101 and I want to make impulses out of them before. Can Voxengo Deconvolver generate pink noise too ? I also read on the Axe-FX forum that a click is better than a sweep to make impulses, how can I produce a click, also with Deconvolver ?

Honestly I've never tried to use a dirac impulse (or "click"), but experimenting with all my crazy stuff/ideas, I've found that short signals sometimes can give really bad results...
So I would suggest you to use a pink noise, cause it seems to me to be the most accurate solution (with my "sperimental" impulses I had a lot of problems using sinesweeps, but this is mainly because of the strange process I have to do to extract them) and doesn't create strange annoying spikes on the highest frequencies (impossible to remove even with post-eq, just remember my old Sperimental Engl impulses...that was the problem)...
I'll upload a pink noise file in this thread when I come back home, so you can download and use it.

After that, once you have the impulses, you may find that they're really long (lot of CPU needed, but considering that you're extracting impulses from digital gears, this shouldn't be the case). If so, don't cut the tail on a casual point! You may create strange behaviour on the highest frequencies (narrow spikes, again), just give me the original impulses and I'll solve the problem (it's a bit boring process, but works fine...)

Cheers

Great site mauro!
Thanks!

Btw, fremen, the pink noise on that site is 1 minute long... cut it, 10 seconds should be more than enough!

hey folks!

I'm working with impulses since yesterday evening. Now i thougt, it was fun to have an impulse of my crapy behringer-amp! And the most sad thing of that try is: it's really sounding like my crapy behringer-amp :P

But here is a little sound sample. Do you think i did everything allright?
(Sorry for the stupid riff, I just forgot how to play guitar cause I'm only tweaking guitar rig and such tools instead of playing guitar :P)

These are Keiffer's impulses, I've tried them but I didn't find any decent one...

I really like the Gsuite; Jcm900..
And Alu you made that impulse to kill the cab..
But is there a way to capture the cab?
Cause Jcm sounds so "In your face"
And in your guide you wrote that you have to turn off everything but the cab..
And it can't be done in Jcm900.. :O

1)Just chain JCM900 and KeFIR with my cab-killer impulse, then record a pink noise through this chain.
2)Disable KeFIR and record another pink noise through this chain adding a second of silence at the end.
3)Open Voxengo Deconvolver.
4)Load the first pink noise as your test tone.
5)Load the second pink noise as your "file to process".
6)Deconvolve and you'll have the JCM900 cab impulse.

Well Alu..
I tried to make some impulses..

They didn't work..
I used Dirak and PinkNoise..

I followed your guide and latest instructions for the Gsuite JCM900..
But they all convolved to 1 kb..
I tried switching places..
Still just 1 kb.. same sound..

And following the guide, I made some from AT2..
They did work however..
Just one that got an endless delay on it.. :)

Never trusted the Dirac personally (and what you have is not really a Dirac btw), I've always used the pinknoise...
The length of the impulse (kb) depends on how much silence you insert at the end of the file to process...
You're probably doing something wrong since you should not have any delay on an AT2 impulse...

Post your test tone and your file to process and I'll try to figure out the problem...

Well I used the Pinknoise and Dirac from http://www.burninwave.com/
I also started using Whitenoise.. Just for trying different approaches..
BUT.. I thought that I should get at least 1 impulse before I start experimenting..

I followed your guide..
I cut the Pinknoise down to 10 sec..

I know about the length of silence afterwards and I edited them down..
I think one of my AT2 worked just fine..

And following the JCM900 guide..
I tried clean channel.. distorted channel.. my preset.. andy sneaps preset..
Well all waves are included..
One or two are processed.. Cause I expected the IR would be created as a seperate file.. in case your wondering..
Hope I made my self clear.. :)
I've never done impulses before and yadda yadda yadda (standard embaressment speech)

Thanks for helping..
